We are professionally engaged in helping families immigrate to the Republic of Slovenia and often encounter people who have been misled by such advertising. In Slovenia, it is only possible to obtain citizenship on the following grounds:
If the parents (at least one of them) are citizens of Slovenia
By birth on the territory of Slovenia (if the parents are stateless)
Naturalisation (after living 10 years in Slovenia)
Persons who have made a significant contribution to the economy, science, culture, or sports of Slovenia
Repatriation – those who have lost Slovenian citizenship and wish to restore it
It is also important to understand that a mandatory condition for obtaining Slovenian citizenship is knowledge of the language at a level not lower than B1 and proof of a strong connection with Slovenia. There is no corruption in Slovenia, and nobody will “fix” your documents!
Be careful and beware of fraudsters!
To apply for a residence permit in Slovenia, you must prepare the following set of documents:
– A passport valid for at least 3 months after the intended expiry date of the residence permit.
– Proof of the purpose of stay, depending on the basis: an employment contract, a certificate of enrolment in an educational institution, company registration with documents confirming active business activity, or other relevant documents.
– A certificate issued by the competent authority confirming the presence or absence of a criminal record (not older than 3 months).
– Proof of financial means — a bank statement, income certificate, contract indicating salary, etc.
– Health insurance valid in the territory of Slovenia and covering the entire period of stay.
This list of documents is not exhaustive and may vary depending on the basis of the application. In certain cases, additional documents may be required.
Yes, it is possible to bring your family, but the conditions depend on the type of residence permit and the status of the family member.
📌 If you have an EU Blue Card, you can apply for family reunification immediately, without the requirement to have lived in Slovenia for one year beforehand.
📌 For other types of residence permits (for example, employment, studies, etc.), reunification is possible only after 1 year of living in Slovenia. You will also need to prove:
– sufficient income,
– suitable accommodation,
– compliance with the requirements for the family member.
👨👩👧👦 Who can be reunited:
• spouse,
• minor child,
• in exceptional cases — an elderly parent (subject to justification and fulfilment of the conditions).
For the main applicant, knowledge of the Slovenian language is not required when obtaining or renewing a temporary residence permit, regardless of the basis (work, studies, entrepreneurship, etc.).
The language requirement applies only to reunited family members aged 18 to 60:
— When obtaining a temporary residence permit for the first time on the basis of family reunification, passing an exam is not required, but proof of enrolment in a Slovenian language course may be requested.
— When renewing a residence permit on the basis of family reunification, it is necessary to provide a certificate confirming that the applicant has passed a language exam at the survival level. This is a very basic level and includes the ability to introduce oneself, talk about one’s profession, family, and place of residence, and understand simple phrases and instructions.
Slovenia offers the possibility to attend a Slovenian language course and take the exam free of charge for those who are subject to the language requirement.
To obtain permanent residence in Slovenia, the applicant must prove knowledge of the Slovenian language at level A2.
Important: If the main applicant is an EU Blue Card holder, language requirements do not apply to their family members either at the first issuance of a residence permit, or at its renewal, or at the subsequent application for permanent residence.
Yes, registration at your actual place of residence in Slovenia is mandatory.
📌 It is from the date of address registration that the official count of your stay in the country begins — and this period is what is taken into account when applying for permanent residence or citizenship,
not the date your residence permit starts.
🏠 Registration must be:
• renewed with each extension of your residence permit,
• updated whenever you change your place of residence.
We will advise you on how to complete the registration correctly and on time in order to avoid problems in the future.
