Frequently asked questions

Are there age limits for studying in Slovenia? +

No. You can enrol at any age — what matters is having completed your previous level of education. Both school leavers and adults changing careers study here.

Do I need to sit entrance exams? +

As a rule, no — most programmes admit on the basis of education documents. The exception is creative subjects and medical fields with an internal competition.

Do I need Slovenian to enrol? +

No. Most universities admit without a Slovenian certificate. Level A2–B1 is required only for medicine, journalism, law, education and creative fields.

Can I study in English? +

Yes, especially at bachelor's and master's level. Universities in Ljubljana, Maribor, Koper and Novo Mesto offer programmes in English — from economics and IT to engineering.

Can I work while studying? +

Yes, up to 20 hours a week through the student service (študentski servis) — a legal form of part-time work for international students.

Can I bring my family with the student? +

As a rule, only after 1 year of continuous residence in Slovenia. The exception is doctoral researchers with the relevant permit.

How much does tuition cost for international students? +

From €2,000 to €6,000/year at bachelor's level and for most master's programmes; from €8,000 to €15,000/year for medicine, technical and some English-taught programmes.
