Types of residence permit in Slovenia and grounds for extension
Before gathering documents it is important to know exactly which type of permit you have and on what grounds it was issued — this determines both the package and the logic of the extension. A full overview of the grounds is in the article on types of Slovenian residence permit.
A work permit (business immigration)
Arranged on the basis of an employment contract. Extension is usually possible if the employment continues and the requirements of labour law are met, and if the company has no debts on taxes and levies.
A study permit
To extend it you need proof of continued study and progress on the programme, plus proof of financial means, at least the minimum needed to live in Slovenia for the whole validity of the permit (12 months), or a sponsor letter from parents confirming the availability of funds.
A family reunification permit
Extension is most often linked to the duration and validity of the main applicant's status and to the family grounds continuing.
A digital nomad permit
Granted to remote workers and entrepreneurs whose income is outside Slovenia. Extension of this type of permit during its validity is not provided for — a new application is only possible 6 months after the permit expires, and it is a full new grant, not an extension.
A permit on special grounds
Granted to certain categories of third-country nationals who meet the set conditions (for example, older people and/or citizens of OECD countries). Extension of such a permit is only possible if the conditions for its issue are still met, or through the main applicant.
Extending a permit: a step-by-step checklist
1. Preparation — start 3 months ahead
In this time you can check the requirements for your specific grounds, gather the proof and, if needed, arrange translations, coordinate documents with the employer, the institution or a consultant.
2. Gathering documents
The exact list depends on the type of permit, but the following are most often requested:
- the application form PROŠNJA ZA PODALJŠANJE ENOTNEGA DOVOLJENJA ZA PREBIVANJE — available at the Upravna enota or for download at infotujci.si;
- a copy of your passport — the pages with personal data and issue/expiry dates;
- a current photo of the set format (3.5 × 4.5 cm) or an electronic photo registration;
- a copy of your valid residence card;
- proof of the grounds for extension (see the table below);
- health insurance valid for the extension period;
- a certificate of no criminal record (Izpisek iz kazenske evidence) — valid for 3 years from submission to the UE, but an updated certificate from the country of citizenship is often requested.

3. Filing the application
The document package is filed at the Upravna enota — it is recommended to book in advance to avoid queues. You can file in person (strictly by appointment), through an authorised representative (a lawyer/representative, if your case allows it) or by post.
4. Review of the application
The UE checks the documents. The review time varies depending on the grounds and the workload and usually takes from a few weeks to a few months. A request for additional documents, clarifying questions or an interview is possible.
5. Decision and collecting the new card
You then receive either a decision on the extension — in which case a new plastic residence card is issued — or a refusal, in which case it is important to quickly assess the reason and the next steps. The ready card usually has to be collected in person at the Upravna enota, or there is an option to receive it by post to the registered address.
Timelines for extending a permit in Slovenia
When to file. It is best to start the process early and file the documents about 2–3 months before the current permit expires — this leaves a buffer for gathering certificates, booking at the UE and possible clarifications.
How long the review takes. The time depends on the grounds, the workload of the Upravna enota and the quality of the document package. In practice the wait most often takes 1 to 4 months.
What to remember. If you filed the application before the current permit expired, your status is generally maintained during the review and you continue to be in the country lawfully.
Possible difficulties with extension and how to prevent them
- An incomplete or incorrect document package — the most common cause of delays and refusals. Before filing, check the list for your grounds, check the validity of certificates and whether translations are in place where required.
- The grounds for the permit are no longer actually met — extension is only possible if you still meet the conditions of your status.
- Breaches of the residence rules — administrative and other violations can negatively affect the decision on the case.
- Filing after the permit expires — there is a risk of losing your lawful status.
- Mismatched personal data — errors in the name, passport number, address or date of birth often lead to queries and delays.
- The language barrier — if your Slovenian is not yet confident, the process can go more slowly, especially with clarifying questions.
- Problems with the employment contract — for an extension on employment grounds it is important that the contract meets the requirements and contains correct terms.
What to do if the permit has already expired
If the application is even 1 day late, it is no longer an extension but a new application, and the previous permit will not be counted. What to do next depends on your visa status:
- Visa-free regime with the EU — you can file from Slovenia, as for a first permit; it is important not to miss the count of 90 days out of 180. Depending on the grounds, you can obtain the permit after filing in Slovenia; in other cases — only in the country of citizenship.
- Visa regime with the EU — you need to leave Slovenia and file the initial application from the country of citizenship.
